Ecology

The gulf of Messara and especially the area of Kalamaki, has great biodiversity. It is a place where many turtles of the protected species Caretta Caretta return to lay their eggs. This is where the sand lily (AMMOKRINOS) thrives, which blooms in the hot sand of August and is a species that is also threatened with extinction.

The owners of AMMOKRINOS offer every year financial assistance to ARCHELON which is an association for the protection of the sea turtle and guide their visitors to the beach of Kalamaki which every summer hosts over fifty nests. It also informs them so that they too can contribute to the rescue of the species.
